Born on January 1, 2000, to parents Charina Almanzar and Joseph Gaston, Ice Spice (real name: Isis Naija Gaston) grew up in the Bronx.

The breakout rapper, who is the oldest of five siblings, talked about how she went viral in an interview with Cosmopolitan from January 2023. She said that her parents and siblings were equally surprised by the sudden spike in views that her video of Erica Banks’ “Buss It” challenge received on social media.

The rapper “Barbie World” expressed her gratitude for being the eldest daughter, saying it “definitely influenced me and my career” and “made me a leader” at the same time. She was named best new artist at the 2023 MTV VMAs.

Ice Spice discussed the advantages and disadvantages of celebrity in a different interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, adding that she is “grateful” for her job. “In the end, it gave me new opportunities. It enabled me to improve my lifestyle, help my family, and help myself,” she said.

When Charina was younger, Joseph and her broke up.

The rapper Ice Spice grew up in the Bronx’s Fordham Road neighbourhood, and although her parents divorced when she was a little child, The Cut claims that they were still close.

Ice Spice offered a tour of her neighborhood in a video that Apple Music posted, noting that ice spice mom, “abuela and ebuelo,” resided “down the block, but on the same block,” and that she lived with her dad and grandmother on one side of Davidson Ave.

The rapper talked on how much she loves the Bronx and how it is “full of people from all different backgrounds.” She has previously stated that her parents are of Dominican and Nigerian descent. She continued, “I think everyone I’ve ever met is mixed, especially in the Bronx.”

Before relocating to her current residence in New Jersey, Ice Spice was dividing her time between her parents’ houses.

Her rap career was inspired by Joseph.

Because “he’s such a private person,” Ice Spice, the rapper, told Variety in September 2023 that not much about his father is known to the general public. She has, however, disclosed how his own career as an underground MC, whose stage name she chooses not to reveal, has impacted her.

She told Paper Magazine, “He really inspired me to want to record.” “He definitely inspired me to want to record.” Ice Spice continued by reminiscing about an incident from her toddler years in the studio.

She remarked, “I remember little flashes.” “Of course, not every detail, but small things like that being shown to you at such a young age make an impression on you.” Ice Spice claimed that the impact was “subconsciously” felt.

“I ended up becoming an artist because I saw my father be one first,” she said. He enjoys music a lot himself. He really is a hip-hop aficionado; I have no idea. He is a whole knowledge base. He’s always teaching me about hip-hop and other such things.

Ice Spice talked to Cosmopolitan about her early years with her father, remembering how the two of them connected over rap as young children. Until she was about nineteen, she says, she “didn’t really hear” her father’s music.

“But just knowing that he was a rapper, that’s all I needed to know,” Ice Spice stated. He would “freestyle all the time in the house,” she continued, and this eventually “inspired” her.

“He would always be like, ‘Let me hear something,'” Ice Spice said of her father. “And put me on the spot.”

Joseph shaped her musical preferences.

Ice Spice’s father works in real estate now, but his musical background has shaped her taste in rap music and certain performers, particularly local favourites like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Jadakiss. Variety claims that Ice Spice first learned to memorise Nicki Minaj’s songs “I Get Crazy” and “Itty Bitty Piggy.”

Ice Spice was raised ‘to be just like her’ by Charina.

Ice Spice attributes her current self to ice spice mom, a Dominican. The rapper stated, “My mom’s a bad b—- and she raised me to be just like her,” in an October 2022 Billboard interview.

She went on, “You already know Latina girls have that sass.” She constantly had her nails done, and I think it affected me too. She simply always has such amazing looks. I was the student in the class with an attractive mother.

Charina has been an Ice Spice fan since she was a young child.

Since her daughter was approximately four years old, Charina has been recording her singing in order to preserve her musical talents. Ice Spice revealed to Billboard that those videos are still in her mother’s possession.

“What’s funny is my mum sent me a video the other day – and I don’t even remember this of course, because I was like four,” of myself the ‘Munch’ artist told the publication. “However, I’m singing in the clip. I was startled to learn that I had never seen this video before in my entire life.”

“So I was singing since four, but I didn’t actually take music seriously until I was older,” she said. “I was writing poems and little freestyle raps in my notes throughout all of elementary and high school.”

Ice Spice realized she “had to take it seriously” after going viral on Twitter for the “Buss It” challenge when she first started college, which inspired her to start putting out music.
